The 2026 World Cup is set to grace North America with a grand total of sixteen host cities and stadiums, each brimming with anticipation for the world’s most celebrated football event.

The question on everyone’s lips: which cities will have the honor of hosting the 2026 World Cup? The answer is tantalizing: 16 captivating locations, with 11 in the United States, 2 in Canada, and 3 in Mexico. On the 16th of June 2022, a select group of 16 cities emerged as the final contenders from the original 22 Candidate Host Cities.

These sixteen cities are poised to welcome 80 104 thrilling matches in this unparalleled showcase of football excellence.

Originally, the United Bid’s vision comprised 60 matches hosted by the United States, including the climactic final in the dazzling city of New York / New Jersey.

Meanwhile, Canada and Mexico were slated to host 10 matches each. However, the dynamic nature of the World Cup means that schedules are subject to change.

Update March 14, 2023: With the format shifting from sixteen groups of three to twelve groups of four, the original match distribution plan is being redefined to encompass a total of 104 matches.

The Complex Scheduling Puzzle

The total number of 80 104 matches is carefully distributed among the host nations. The United States, the central hub of this footballing spectacle, will host 60 matches, while Canada and Mexico will each welcome 10 matches.

These matches will be spread across the group and knockout stages.

The United Bid originally allocated the final to the iconic MetLife Stadium in New York/New Jersey, with the opening match set to electrify either Los Angeles or Mexico City.
